世界の保育・幼児教育の状況を理解するために、各国の背景事情の把握は欠かせません。ここでは、その国の人口規模・教育投資などの基礎的な情報から教育制度に至るまでを、就学前の時期を中心にご紹介します。世界の保育・幼児教育に関心のある読者の皆さまの参考になれば幸いです。

学制：小学校（６歳から11歳）、中学校（12歳から14歳）、高校（15歳から16歳）、中等後教育・予科（17歳から18歳）、大学（19歳から）
管轄省庁：教育省、就学前教育に関しては国家統合・社会開発省、農村開発省なども管轄。
義務教育：６歳から11歳
小学校は教授言語別に分けられ、マレー語の学校、中国語の学校、タミル語の学校がある。非マレー語の小学校を卒業した生徒は、１年間のマレー語教育を受けるため中学校に４年在籍することになる。
